Ukraine’s participation in the UN peacekeeping activities
Since July 1992, Ukraine has been an active contributor of military and police personnel in UN peacekeeping operations.
Blue helmets represent Ukraine in six United Nations PKOs: United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, UN Mission in South Sudan, United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. The national contingent of Ukraine in MONUSCO is the largest in number and includes the 18th Separate Helicopter Unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ukraine was one of the initiators of the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel of 1994 and one of the first who ratified it in July 1995.
In 2002 the UN General Assembly unanimously approved resolution 57/129 tabled by the delegation of Ukraine, which proclaimed May 29 as International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
Ukraine supports the UN Secretary-General’s initiative Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) on reforming UN PKOs. On 25 September 2018 Ukraine joined the United Nations Secretary-General's Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN Peacekeeping Operations.
Ukraine cosponsored the Security Council resolution 2272 (2016) on the prevention of sexual exploitation.
On 5 May 2016 Ukraine joined the Kigali Principles, which recognizes the protection of civilians as one of the main objectives of the UN PKOs.
In 2018 Ukraine joined a group of contributing states for protecting the environment in the UN PKOs.
